How to set up Wizarr
· Updated 18 September 2026 · SparkBox team
Wizarr turns "can I get on your Plex?" into a link you send. Your friend clicks it, makes their own account on your media server, and gets a short walkthrough of how to actually watch. This guide covers enabling it, the setup screen, making your first invite, and where its data lives.
1. What is Wizarr?
Wizarr hands out invitations to your media server. Instead of you creating an account by hand and sending someone a password, you generate a link — they open it, pick their own username and password, and Wizarr creates the account on your Jellyfin, Plex, or Emby for you. Invites can expire, be limited to a single use, and grant access to only the libraries you choose, so a link that leaks later is not a permanent hole. New arrivals also get a short "here's how to watch" walkthrough, which saves you the same three questions every time.
2. Before you start
You need a media server already running — enable the Media set (Jellyfin) first, or have Plex or Emby going. You'll also need an API key from it: in Jellyfin that's Dashboard → Advanced → API Keys. An API key is just a long connection code that lets Wizarr create accounts for you.
Open Wizarr as soon as you enable it. Like most self-hosted apps, the first person to reach its setup screen becomes the admin — so finish setup yourself rather than leaving it sitting untouched.
3. How to access it
Once it's enabled, Wizarr runs on your SparkBox at:
http://<your-NAS-IP>:5690
The first visit lands on a setup screen where you create the admin account, then connect Wizarr to your media server: its address (for Jellyfin on this box, http://<your-NAS-IP>:8096) plus the API key you copied above.
4. Making your first invite
From the Wizarr dashboard, create an invitation and you get a link to send. Three settings are worth setting every time:
- Expiry — how long the link stays good. A few days is plenty; it stops an old message being forwarded around next year.
- Uses — set it to 1 for one person. Otherwise anyone who receives a forward can join.
- Libraries — which parts of your collection the new account can see. You can share the film library without sharing everything else.
Send the link however you normally talk to that person. They never see your admin login, and you never type a password on their behalf.
5. Where your data lives
Wizarr keeps its database of invites and settings on the SparkBox host under:
/opt/sparkbox/modules/wizarr/config/
Backups via the SparkBox dashboard's Backup tile include this directory by default, so a single restore brings Wizarr back with your invite history intact.

Questions, or did this not match your box?
Every guide here came from a real problem someone hit. If yours behaves differently, say so — that is how these get corrected, and how the fix gets prioritised.
We answer there rather than in a comment box, because that is where the people who have already solved it are.
