What SparkBox users have said in public — on the Demox community and on YouTube — in their own words. Every quote links back to where it was said; long ones are trimmed to the praise, with each cut marked “…”.
“I’m only a few months into my self-hosting/Linux journey, and Tom AI has made it a lot easier than it would otherwise have been. While helping find errors and fix them, it also teaches me things along the way. I had an occasion where Tom AI couldn’t fix an issue for me — but with what it was asking me, I was able to fix it myself (win, win). In my newbie opinion, being a backer has been 100% worth it. Thanks to Tom and the team for all their hard work.”
“I’ve tried a couple of times to set up my own home server with some of these apps but could never get them all to work correctly together. One would randomly stop working, I’d fix that, and another one would drop. TomSparkBox is so user friendly that I was able to get it spun up and working in just a few hours. Thanks Tom!”
“That was one of the nicest installs I have done in a long time, super fast too — and this interface you came up with is gorgeous, I love it. A couple of small glitches, and your own prompts pointed me to the fixes.”
“Damn dude! Just set up something similar and it took me weeks. This is amazing.”
“I’d watched so many one-stop ARR stack videos that took hours and were always inconsistent. Not with this — everything stays working even after updates. The first good, sturdy solution.”
“Thank you so much for this. I am new to servers and self-hosting. My files were a mess and Sonarr downloads were taking weeks due to internet issues. Using Tom-AI and SparkBox I was up and running in an hour with a clean organized WORKING system. thank you for making your site free and your AI assistance a 1-time payment. I am free of subscriptions and watching the media I love.”
“Wow, the response and fix times on this project are insane! I so wish I found this earlier, I have wasted so much time trying to get arrstacks from different people and even paid tools to work on proxmox lxc and your tool just worked flawless out of the box! I know i might have issues with tailscale and lxc but i dont mind, tailscale will be on my router in that case anyway. Thanks so much!”
“… Having cobbled together arr stacks in Windows thrice before, I'm excited that I was able to get all going in one foul swoop with such an accessible and beautiful interface!
… Many many thanks!!”
“Legit just took a day off to work on my new homelab, your dashboard has been clutch in getting started! I just need to watch your videos again to make sure I’m doing all of the other setup correctly now. Thank you for this awesome package, I probably wouldn’t have tried self hosting otherwise”
“Hi Tom,
Over and running on the Mint box and sweet as. Went way easier than the UGOS install (I ready the guide properly this time - which I would stress any new user do and it was an easy install. RTFM as they say) The NAS will be returning to what it does best and hosting files. I learned a lot from the UGOS install but the thing I learned the most was to allow the scripts to do their thing and not running ahead thinking I knew what I was doing just because I had done a manual install of ARRSuite in the past 🙄”
“I upgraded to a patch a few days back and the authentication links for Seerr/Moonfin plugin were finally working. Yay! But for a bit, opening seerr direct in the browser wasn't holding on to the user authentication, it would re-prompt for login every click.
But as of this morning's upgrade, all better now. Can access seerr from my apple TV moonfin client as well as the browser. Thumbs up!”
“I've had trouble getting things set up with my drives too. Using the integrated AI tool helped me get things set up and get me started and learned a lot along the way :) I'm a total Linux noob so if I can do it you should be able too. Don't give up just yet my friend!”
“thank you, i had a lot of trouble trying to set up the arr stack a while ago, and SparkBox makes everything easy and pre-configured. … thanks again!”
“I went ahead and ran a clean slate one more time. installed Plex. Waited 10 minutes then clicked the plex Icon from the homepage of SparkBox. This prompted me for a claim code which i entered and the system recreated the container. I then was able to properly see the server in my plex account. thanks for the support and sorry for being a hassle.”
“… That fixed erverything. … I recommend you start from scratch, especially because this method seems to have everything I need right off the bat anyways..
Anyway, I love your one click method and I am so excited to start playing with indexers and other media storage things like imich! Thank you so much for all of the hard work!”
“I didn't even know ther was a service passwords tab in setting. That's exactly what I need to get into Nginx. Thank you so much!”
“That fixed the volume size issue, thank you. I restarted the SparkBox, had the Doctor do a health check and they returned All Checks Passed! I can now access the web interface and Everything's Running Smoothly. Thanks again.”
“Thank you so much that worked! Just to clarify the steps I took - I followed everything you said to do and none of it worked until I changed the networkingMode=NAT and that fixed it. Have a good rest of your day and thank you for the help Chris”
“Yay! My box was one of the ones that you helped me manually update every time. Enough to where I recognized the command posted. Thank you for your hard work. I'm happy to know that it will update with a press of a button now.”
“Awesome. Yep, license behavior working now exactly as stated above (apart from a toast notification that includes the blurb "auto updates are now enabled", which, if someone has gone through editing the .json file, I think they'll know that can be ignored.) The auto update toggle remained off since we edited that json and is now functional if I want to change through the dashboard instead. Thanks Tom and 'Chris'!”
“Chris, I can confirm the 'remotelibrary' loads before the Jellyfin container/docker service resulting with my NAS Library being automatically mounted to Jellyfin.
Thank you so much!”
“Thanks for that - worked a treat. I was just having a play about with it setup on a Linux machine. Just rebuilt it on a UGreen NAS and install has been flawless 👍🏻”
“Thank you, mounting it directly to the /opt/sparkbox/data/audiobooks folder works like a charm :)”
“Your SparkBox update 1.6.364 fixed the issue”
“Thanks for that Tom,
The module copy appears to have done the trick and now running on the laptop rather than the more power hungry Dell tower. …”
“Hey Tom got it all set up and working. I deleted the lxc and created a ubuntu server ve. Worked flawlessly. Now just need to learn how to use it. Thanks for all the help. This is wicked.”
“… I have read though some trouble shooting forums and Tom AI helped me get the graphics card configure to work with the programs.
… Thank you for all of the help”
“I think it got too late for me. I woke up this morning and attempted what you said to no success but then went back to the documentation and found troubleshooting for seerr. I was having the "Validation failed. Please toggle the libraries again to continue." issue, I followed the step and got it fixed. This is just a great time for me to mention that you have built an awesome tool here.
I believe I just need to point the arrstack to the NAS and I am ready to give it the first test run.
thank you for all of the help”
“Man you are awesome! Instantly worked no waiting! Now I can free up some disk space!”
“… For most users that’s literally it, it’s so simple, and everything is just already setup. … Never mind how gorgeous the GUI is as well, simple but informative. I’m excited to continue to see where this goes moving forward and I will continue to support this project.”
“I backed the project before I ever had plan to install it, I just wanted it to succeed.
I've now installed it and am looking through it as a all in one box replacement on bare metal for a lot of tasks, I very much like the new style interface.
… I believe in the project, I like what you're doing so far.
… Thanks for the hard work brother.”
“Perfect, update completed with no issues and dashboard is updated to 1.6.271 and all services are running! I appreciate the help and keep up the good work!”
“I do want to say thank you so much setting this up has been a pleasure and completely turned what felt like was going to be a huge task into something that got of the ground very quickly. It has been fun tinkering with everything and figuring out all it can do.
… Thanks again I do really appreciate how well this works.”
“Thanks everyone for the help! I now have SparkBox dashboard up and running with zero errors I am very excited to start self hosting with all these available apps! The Vm was way smoother than the container for setup.”
“Thanks for the help. I did eventually get it working, though restarting docker was not enough to get it to work. I ended up having to nuke the whole install and reinstall. Not sure what changed to make the install work after the nuke (other than the docker dns config), but it is working now.
Thanks for making this setup! I've been considering setting up a server for a while but the barrier was always just a bit higher than I wanted to deal with. SparkBox gave me the push I needed to take the plunge.”
“@tomspark I just wanna say well done, sir. This was an amazingly simple project to get up and running.
… Things went much more smoothly the second time. … This is a very well thought-out and executed project. Thank You. Tom AI was also very helpful. …”
“I believed that worked - Radarr and Sonarr no longer have the errors they had before. …”
“Thanks for your reply. I think I understand what my problem was, whenever I wanted to reboot or shutdown the VM I had been shutting down SparkBox with sudo SparkBox down, I thought it would need to be shutdown to prevent corruption. I just did a quick shutdown and restart of the VM without shutting down SparkBox and it started up on it's own.
Thanks for your help, much appreciated :)”
“Thanks for the response.....I already have a subscription with Nordvpn which is why I was attempting to use it. I have a couple of months left with the subscription and will check out SurfShark at that time. My first interest in auto downloading files was using Truenas and although I was able to get it working to a degree, I always found the file structuring part of it difficult. I'd download files and couldn't find them so this was a no brainer for me. I've tried YAMS and a couple of others but yours fixes the issues I had with the file structuring. Thanks again....I watch your videos all the time.”
“Thanks for the quick fix :) I can now access the dashboard and see all my apps …”
“SUCCESS!!! I was able to log into Portainer with the generated creds! The speed at which you are getting these bugs dealt with is so cool to see in real time.
… Thanks to you, I am quickly getting more familiar with Linux CLI”
“… I've been running the service just under a week and its all been pretty seamless.
… I like that I can keep it all secure.
… I'd pay for something like this. I'm glad I dont, but I also do support where I can.
… Keep up the great work!”
“You are right sudo SparkBox up fixed the issue and added the password to settings -> Passwords”
“… I've spun up a ubuntu server and installed SparkBox and it all looks fantastic and worked extremely well.
… Thanks in advance and again, great work with the tool!”
“First, thank you. This update worked really well and has return my dashboard. …”
“… Thank you for the assist!
… [OK] SparkBox is running!
… [OK] Created empty Calibre library in /volume1/sparkbox-data/books — Calibre-Web's first-run screen will now accept the default /books. …”
“… and it fixed the apps not showing.”
“… I think SparkBox is great to get me to use the tools and learn more about them so I am enjoying the experience so far.”
“… Thanks for the quick reply and explanation.
… The easiest, most user-friendly self-hosting stack anywhere.
… [SparkBox] Docker already installed: Docker version 28.3.1, build 38b7060 [SparkBox] Added truenas_admin to the docker group — docker commands work without sudo after the next login. …”
“… I saved, exited and relogged into Prowlarr to confirm that SparkBox password worked. All is good now with this issue. …”
“Thank you for your reply. … Now it is correctly installed on my Nvme drive (volume 1) on my docker file. …”
“… Great! That seems to have sorted out the app +VPN issues, and everything is loading and running well. …”
“Thanks Tom, love your product and plan on becoming a paid supporter as soon as I can. Your quick response helped seal the deal!”
“So I did start the process of checking it out tonight, I ran into some issues with wireshark integration but I think it might have been a my system issue as I’m running fedora 44 and that wasn’t one of the approved distros. I believe I was able to make a few tweaks and it seems to be working great now. I’m looking forward to messing around with it some more tomorrow!”
“I just found your video on SparkBox and I think it’s incredible. I have a media server I have been messing around with for months end I think this is a super cool application to simplify setup. …”
“Thanks! … Was able to install TomSparkBox finally, thanks to your help! …”
“Wahoo! Found and squashed a bug! /high-5
I saw the update and just applied it. Media Center started installing immediately after the service restarted.
I just joined as a supporter. Thanks again, will try to use TomAI first, otherwise i'll reach out here. Thanks again for an incredible build!”
“You're amazing! I was just about to try to figure out the code myself from one of your other support responses; I would have only missed the "-data" :D …”
“It's a single mkv file and I just moved it successfully. The title was completely wrong. I'll need to get a MKV editor to clean up some of my movies going forward. Thanks for the help!”
“Mobile (iPhone) looks much better!
… Again, great job tackling all of this in such a short amount of time! You are doing great! …”
“I updated SB from .240 to .245, and then requested all apps be updated... and it worked! First time in a couple weeks, so that's great news! I'm not sure what changed from 240 to 245, but thank you!”
“Tom, Thank you for explaining that to me. … I have researched doing this the old way and so thankful for your process. Among the other apps you have preconfigured to make homelabbing easy and accessible to all.”
“… thank you for the reply.
… I have HTTPS Certificates enabled in /admin/dns and can connect to SparkBox via Tailscale. …”
“Thanks, your instructions solved the problem! …”
“That did it.
I did run SparkBox up after creating the folder, but I created media/data/TV instead of just media/TV. I got it running and have confirmed I can watch videos both on my desktop and on other devices on the network.
Thanks so much for creating SparkBox and all the help getting it set up!”
“I am back to follow up on our above conversation, your comment above this is what fixed the issue for me. I separated QBitTorrent and SABnzbd folder schemes and this allowed sonarr/radarr to finally see the activity from SAB. Thank you!”
“Perfect, the password reset works. …”
“Thank you for your reply; I just got it working thanks to your help. … It works now. … Thank you.”
“Wow! Thank you so much, it loaded up instantly using localhost! I appreciate all of your help!”
“Damn dude !!!! Just setup something similiar and took me weeks ! This is amazing !”
“Hey, did everything and i got the menus back! …”
“I do like the works that been done with the SparkBox project i find it very easy and simple to use for someone fairly new to homelabbing
… Been testing it on VMware and I love it pretty easy like I said”
“All working without issue for the media stack.
After reading around docker and LXC's and how you should always use a VM for socker: I think the fact that works so well a great piece of work and credit to you. I can only imagine the effort.
Thanks!”
“Hi, thanks for your reply. I pulled the trigger and commited. I created an NFS share and mounted that to my new debian VM hosting SparkBox. I'll let you know how I get on, but its already looking like a fine piece of software. Hats off to you sir.”
“Awesome! Tysm I really appreciate it, this is a great program you've made. Definitely makes the *arr things less intimidating to a newbie”
“Just set up SparkBox and logged in, everything worked great. Very much looking forward to using this very cool new service. Clearly, tons of hard work has gone into it. Dashboard, Homepage, and NPM all report as Up (healthy). … Thx again, very cool.”
“… SparkBox Jellyfin is working well.”
“… Your tool works perfectly! I really liked all the automated you added 😊”
“Thank you Chris. I actually got it working under windows. …”
“After a few more hickups is SparkBox running smooth now.”
“Thanks, I just reselected the paths and it worked, thank you”
“I just want to hop on to this thread. Im new to self hosting and I was thinking the same thing. I am on a windows PC and setting all this up. And I love the simplicity and community behind this project. It's a great entery for someone like me. But I'm in the same boat. I have 2 separate 2TB drive with my media. And I'll be trying these solutions to point my Jellyfin and the entire arr stack to my separate drives.”
“I tried one more attempt to fix the issues with Tom AI and I think we finally found the root of the problem. For the first time the dashboard is all green and everything connects. I will keep in mind that I can do a restart if needed. Thanks”
“… Yes, that fixed it for me. Thanks!!”
“… This is a dope ass product and you're goated for it. … Great work dude. Keep that shit up. Its awesome.”
“Thank you so much for the advice! I'll most likely look into Ubuntu throughout the week, but this definitely leads me in the right direction. I'm mostly looking into simple stuff for now, like small game servers and media, but I definitely want something future-proof that I can involve my whole house in.”
“Hey I am using SparkBox on ugos right now and its great experience. …”
“… Yesterday I took another close look at the project and was again very impress. So this time I bucked up and checked out to join Legend status and also help support the project. … Thanks for your help and time.”

Thanks very much for an answer. I truly appreciate what you are doing.”
“I’m not a part of this thread, so I don’t want to highjack it. I just wanted to say, your responsiveness to comments and questions on your product is next level dude. Major kudos to you!”

… god damn thank you for support”
“Thank you so much for the quick reply, I think I was able to get it working. …”
“Okay got it to work. I had to mount it to mp=/mnt/ARR_Media_Share/data/downloads, since if you do it to /incomplete it just creates that incomplete folder on the HDD and then theres the nvme folder inside the other incomplete folder. So now the incomplete and download folders are on the nvme and then Radarr moves them to the movies folder on the HDD. Thanks for the help.”
“Hey Tom,
***"run the update from SSH instead of the dashboard button"***

“Honestly, I'm not even sure if I'll use the script. I set everything up manually and I don't feel the need to reinstall at this time. That said, I believe in what you're doing enough that I purchased the Legend tier. I hope that you can keep it going and help the community. I appreciate what you've created and hopefully it becomes a gold standard, maybe someday I will use it, for now, I hope that the small donation provides some relief for the cost of the AI integrations. Good luck!”
“Hi Tom, many thanks for your reply. I am going to look through this a bit later this evening and see if I can correct it. I appreciate the level of detail you give in your replies, it's actually very refreshing to see someone offer this level of support for something, so thanks again :)”

“Just chiming in to say thanks as well! Same exact instance for me and workaround also got me to step 3. Thanks all!”
“Seems to be working, thank you! I have a warning in Radarr: "Download client SABnzbd places downloads in the root folder /data/Movies/. You should not download to a root folder."
It does not bother me, though. Just a warning.”
“Thank you! I was able to change the Port to another one that was available and everything started up normally!”

I love tinkering with my modest homelab (openwrt router + old PC with DDR3 RAM running Proxmox) 😎 I plan to spin up a VM and test out SparkBox! So happy I found this right before the Sept cut off!

“… I really enjoy the product and am more than happy to support. …”
“Thanks for fixing this one!”
“It's possible I sent exactly 50 messages before i reset. Thanks for the clarification on it being a daily limit. The issues leading to me resetting was the bootloader not configuring Jellyfin in the media stack. No API key was pulled or account made. It appears to have worked this time for me. After install, I waited about 10 minutes before trying to install the media stack, not sure if the extra time helped or not. I appreciate the quick response”
